Damon Garcia

Damon Garcia is a public theologian, writer, video essayist, and author of The God Who Riots, and his new book, You Don't Need a Calling: An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto for a Life of Purpose. He discovered his passion for ministering to spiritual misfits and radicals through evangelical youth and young adult ministry. This passion led him out of evangelicalism and into post-Christian spaces, where he continues to develop a liberative Christianity for a disillusioned generation through video essays and dialogue. Garcia’s work is inspired by liberation theology and anti-capitalist politics as he helps people unsettle and untangle oppressive ideologies. He lives in Santa Maria, California. Title ShortAn Anti-Capitalist Guide to Finding Purpose
    Venue Front Porch
Experience DescriptionWe need to update the way we talk about how to find purpose in the context of the increasing cost of living and decreasing meaningful work. Telling people to discover their calling, turn it into a career, and keep climbing doesn't make sense to a generation that can afford less than previous generations. The Affordability Crisis and the Purpose Crisis share the same root problem: a capitalist system that makes us confine our dreams to its demand for profit. Let's learn how to unbind our purpose from capitalism with Damon Garcia, author of You Don't Need a Calling: An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto for a Life of Purpose. And let's learn how we can share a new unbound vision of purpose to our communities, families, and churches.

Title ShortHow to Tell Your Story When It Feels Too Messy
    Venue Front Porch
Experience DescriptionWe all have sacred stories that can help other people, but what if your story doesn't fit the traditional pattern of everyone else's stories? Your story can still be meaningful even when it lacks a happy ending, a moral lesson, or a positive message. Damon Garcia, author of You Don't Need a Calling: An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto for a Life of Purpose, had to learn how to reframe the story of his calling to ministry when he exposed the messy details he had hidden for years. What he thought was a traditional story of God calling him to be a pastor was actually a story of manipulation by church leaders who faked a divine experience. But after wrestling with his full story, with all its messy details, he learned how to find the divinity in the chaos and beautiful imperfection of his story. Learn how you can tell your own story, no matter how weird, chaotic, or messy it is. And learn how you can use your story to help people just like you.
