Anne Sims

Anne Sims

Anne Sims is a United Methodist pastor, a spouse, a parent to two ridiculous dogs, and a woman living with ADHD in midlife...and so she has learned to be a very unlikely contemplative. Long silences and retreats don't fit into her lifestyle, but so much that is beautiful and good does, if she just takes it in small bites. In the rest of her free time, she does many different crafts (none of them particularly well, but all with enthusiasm), reads fantasy novels, and collects recipes like she's actually going to cook. She enjoys long mornings at her local coffee shop, watching the river roll by at her local park in Oriental, NC, and helping people connect with one another and with God in any way she can. Got questions? Want to plan a retreat? Need a book recommendation? Email her at asims@nccumc.org.

Title ShortBound Books, Unbound Conversations: “For Whom the Belle Tolls”
    Venue Convo Table 08
Experience DescriptionHit with the barrage of fascism and oppression we see every day, it's easy to feel utterly isolated and despondent. Book groups can be an important help. They combine community, wisdom, and literary guides to help us understand issues and fight injustice. To help get the conversations flying, four of your fellow geese plan to host book groups in the Conversation Hall. There will be sign-up sheets at each discussion session for folks who want to meet online throughout the year. Welcome to the Hellp Desk. Jaysea Lynn’s debut romantasy novel, “For Whom the Belle Tolls” was born as a series of single actor TikTok skits about working customer service in Hell. This is not any afterlife you’ve ever heard of, though: the coffee is exceptional, Hell’s therapy levels help souls heal and grow, and Lily’s personal Paradise features a hobbit hole with a purple door, and a purple demon all her own. Join Anne Sims for a chat about being a soul and what should happen after death. Trigger warning: violence, sex, terminal illness, child abuse, sexual assault, and religious trauma are all referenced along with hope and beauty and a kid in a shark onesie you’ll love.

    Title ShortSmall Bite Spirituality
    Venue UMC
Experience DescriptionWho's got time for navel-gazing? Between the pressures of our everyday lives and all they entail, we' can easily find ourselves with no time to simply be still and be present. Our overstimulated brains sometimes can't be quiet without a little help. Join us for the intersection of spiritual practice and self-regulation. We'll play with toys, dabble in some creative play on paper and with words and images, and share ideas about how we might feed our need for contemplation and creativity on our limited budgets of time and attention.
