Pastor Paul Drees is an ELCA pastor who started posting to TikTok in 2021, after he got in trouble for talking about justice from the pulpit. Since then he has created over 600 videos, which have become more popular than he could have imagined. These videos have been seen over 200 million times, and he has roughly 1.1 million followers across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. His faith is rooted in Liberation theology (which he first learned from the writings of Oscar Romero), and the Lutheran understanding of Grace (that God’s salvation is a gift, not something we can earn). Paul lives in the Driftless region of Southwest Wisconsin with his wife, Anna. Omnia donum est.

    Experience DescriptionWhy do most people assume Christian = Conservative? Pr. Paul Drees has wrestled with this question for over 20 years, and finally vowed to do something about it in 2021. Since then, his content has reached over 200 million views, and he’s gathered 1.1 million followers across platforms. Thousands of people have told him they didn’t know that Christianity could be centered on liberation, compassion, and LGBTQ+ acceptance. As this was happening, the churches he led barely grew at all, despite hearing the same message. In this presentation and the following conversation, Pr. Paul hopes to speak to that disconnect, the many leaders within progressive Christianity, the forces that suppressed those voices, and how progressive Christians can seize the public narrative going forward.
