Rebecca Herman

Rebecca Herman

I’ve been attending the Wild Goose Festival since 2012. I live in Blacksburg, VA and am a member of a progressive UCC community there called Glade Church. I am a retired educator in the field of Deaf Ed and graduated w my Masters from Gallaudet University. At the WGF I’ve served as a volunteer sign language Interpreter for a few years alongside other professionally qualified Interpreters. “DEI” (diversity, equal access and inclusion) and social justice issues are areas of interest to me and I would like to read and discuss books on these topics with other WGF folks. I have been in several long-term book groups and have experience coordinating them via Zoom. I am hoping to meet other WGF participants who would like to join me in an on-going book group, covering a variety of books, meeting monthly on Zoom, over the coming year. The book I’ll lead a discussion of at this year’s festival is The Justice of Jesus by Joash Thomas.

EXPERIENCES
    Show Date
    Fri 4 Sep 2026 10:00 AM to 10:50 AM
Title ShortBound Books/Unbound Conversations: The Justice of Jesusor practical discipleship
    Venue Convo Table 08
Experience DescriptionDo you sometimes feel isolated and helpless in the face of fascism, violence, and oppression? That’s part of the autocrat’s playbook! Connection and community are the antidote. Book groups can help us understand these times and find our unique role in the fight for justice. We are holding several book group conversations this week. Reading the books is a plus, but not necessary. Just come and hear and share stories of bravery and courage and hopefully walk away feeling empowered! RRebecca, host of this experience, enjoyed The Justice of Jesus and would love to discuss it with other “Geese.” Is justice a priority in your church/community? How are we serving others? In The Justice of Jesus, theologian and international speaker Fr.Joash Thomas reveals how authentic biblical faith leads to caring for the vulnerable and working for positive change. He addresses the colonization of the Western Church and ways to resist “empire-shaped” thinking. He shares his own journey from a conservative, evangelical framework to his Global South roots in the ancient teachings of St. Thomas within a more Anglican-Episcopal church (in which he is an ordained priest). Thomas has served in churches across cultures and continents and shows how justice is at the heart of following Christ. Whether you're a pastor, small group leader, or simply want to make a difference in your community, the book offers practical wisdom: ● why caring for others isn't optional for Christians ● stories from churches making an impact in their communities ● practical ideas for prayer, volunteering, and partnerships ● fresh insights on following Jesus. Hopefully, you will go home to your church / community with ideas and things to ponder about the justice of Jesus. Bound Books/Unbound Conversations: The Justice of Jesus by Joash Thomas
