Jon Carl Lewis (he/him) is a liberative theologian and spiritual embodiment coach. He helps serious followers of Jesus explore healthy, justice-oriented, Jesus-centered and joyful attitudes and practices around sexuality, relating, and the body. He invites people of faith into conversation around discerning the truly Good News of our sexual and relational diversity as witness to Spirit moving through and remaking the world. Jon Carl brings theological and spiritual curiosity—and a geeky love of peer-reviewed science—to the diversity, complexity, and fluidity of real people’s lived sexual/spiritual experiences.

    Experience DescriptionThe liberative work of Jesus Christ invites men to free themselves for God’s service by channeling the power of Eros. In this presentation and discussion, all are welcome to: • NOT waste time repeating the characteristics of “toxic masculinity” we should have memorized by now. • INSTEAD focus on Jesus’ call to radical authenticity beyond harm reduction into wholeness and generativity. • NOT create criteria for a new “ideal man” or even an “ideal Christian man.” • INSTEAD claim our freedom in Jesus to engage the erotic flow of life that reveals our truest desires AND gifts for the world. • NOT construct new frameworks which split us from ourselves and others for “purity’s” sake. • INSTEAD explore Jesus’ invitation into integration—including the erotic—to break us out of patriarchal restrictions into our spiritual power of authenticity and wholeness. Our culturally imposed fear of the erotic deafens our ears to Jesus’ call to authenticity and wholeness, guided by the Spirit who leads us into powerful transformation through men’s unruly desires, not despite them. Releasing this fear allows men to connect with rich, deep, joyful impulses toward generative, Spirit-led healing, loving, and collective action while participating in the co-creation of the kin(g)dom of God.

    Experience DescriptionMen’s groups, both “Christian” and “spiritual,” attempt men’s healing, integration and connection primarily through words and ideas. Emotional expression is structured as stylized, verbal confession witnessed in silence by other men instructed to not interact. Jesus’ invitation to participatory action in the world includes physical participation as whole, integrated beings within the Sacred dance and in the kin(g)dom-making creative project of God. This experience offers tools for personal integration and building safe containers for groups of men to be present as their whole selves. Anyone who identifies as a man or male* is welcome to participate in this gently guided, hands-on experience of clothed, non-sexual, physical connection with other men. Individual centering and grounding exercises connect us with the wisdom of our bodies. After establishing agreements around enthusiastic consent (and enthusiastic opting-out), we move to non-touch, interactive practices. Space will be held for verbal reflection throughout. A variety of guided, mutual touch exercises culminate in physically resting together in a collective practice of stillness. Mutual thanksgiving and blessing conclude the experience. *Straight, non-straight, exploring, queer, cis, and trans men are all welcome. This experience draws on insights from the workshop “Men, Christ, and Eros… Unbound.”
